- Rivers facilitate trade, production & distribution of agricultural goods and communication.

- Rivers tie smaller communities together and tend to unify them, allowing faster and more efficient transportation of governing officials and soldiers for defence and policing.

- Rivers provide boundaries and military defences. For walled cities, no wall is initially needed on the side of the river.

- The power of flowing water can be used.

- Rivers are used for bathing, recreation and religious purposes.

- Flowing water has a calming and pleasant effect on humans generally unless it reaches flood stages.
