Both IELTS and TOEFL test the same language skills listening, speaking, reading and writing. TOEFL is a computer based test and IELTS is a paper based test.

Main difference in preparation would be to practice according to the different patterns of the test. For example, IELTS listening section may have question types like labelling a map or diagram etc which are not used in TOEFL.

Working on a computer (typing, scrolling, speaking into a microphone etc) in TOEFL versus working on paper for reading and writing and then talking to an examiner one on one in Speaking section of IELTS is a considerable aspect that decides the way you practice.
