hen you encounter a topic that you are not familiar with, it is always wise to make up a story at the moment. But while you're doing this, make sure you don't stammer too much or sound less genuine. The ultimate goal of the speaking test is to check your English vocabulary (your choice of words), grammar and your overall speaking skills.

To make you sound more confident, here are some suggestions to follow.

  1. Do thorough research on the internet: To avoid landing with a topic unfamiliar to you, you must ensure that nothing is missed while practising. Prepared in advance by going through all the topics beforehand so that you feel confident while answering.

  1. Use movies and TV shows as reference: Movies can come in handy when you're not able to recollect a particular incident or have no experience with the topic. Rephrase the scenario in your terms and explain it.

  1. Use stories that others told you: This is a great way to deal with such situations. You can always narrate an incident that happened to your friend or relative and explain it as a first-person narrative.

Overall, you are most likely to get a topic familiar to you, so don’t overdo the exercise. Just keep reading and keep your mind open when you face difficulty. Remember, the goal is to check your communications skills and not how much knowledge you possess.
