There is a penalty for writing words under 150 or task 1 and 250 words for task 2. You will get a lower band score if you underwrite your words. Hence be cautious and always maintain the word count above the given target.

Here are some ways you can ensure that-

  1. Always exceed the word count- By doing so, you are keeping yourself safe from losing the score band
  2. Maintain good handwriting- Make sure your handwriting is neat and legible and appears clear to the examiner.
  3. Count the lines and not each word- Remember that you are writing under the clock, hence count the number of lines instead.
  4. Do not memorize the content- The examiner always gets to know if your content is memorized. So try to sound genuine while writing.
  5. Paraphrase the question- In the first paragraph, always begin by paraphrasing the question. This will give you the advantage of adding more words to your essay.
  6. Answer the entire question- Do not leave your essay unfinished. Make sure you answer everything asked in the essay. The examiner might consider this as a drawback and score you an average 5 bandwidth.
  7. Quality over quantity always: This means that writing a lengthy answer will not draw you more marks if it lacks quality. Do not include too much of buffer content but make sure you are every specific with your essay.
