Pronunciation and accent mean two different things. Pronunciation can help you gain high scores in an IELTS exam because what an examiner will look for how familiar you are with English words. So your accent does not influence anything when appearing for an IELTS exam.

While appearing for the verbal section in an IELTS, these are the key areas your examiner will check.

  • Your fluency of the language
  • Your Vocabulary
  • How accurate is your pronunciation

Hence do not waste time trying to perfect an unnatural American or British accent.

Let's get deeper into what pronunciation is.

It is the ability to sound clear and accurate while speaking. Accent, on the other hand, is just the distinctive way you communicate.

Fluency: This includes all domains that build a language such as Vocabulary, grammar and the confidence with which you speak. One way to improve your fluency is by communicating more and watching more English tv shows and movies.

Vocabulary: A wide range of Vocabulary is what can help you outstand from the rest of the test takers. However, make sure you do not overuse them. The trick is to choose words in the right context. Please do not use them every time you get a chance to show off your Vocabulary.

Pronunciation: Your key to acing the IELTS speaking section is pronunciation. Because if the examiner cannot understand what you're trying to say, the other skills don't even matter.
