I am planning to take up German language classes to apply for jobs in Germany. I am a little confused due to the following factors: 1. How effective is online training? 2. I consulted many institutes .each of them offer different duration of course for same certification. I want to know how many hours of classes are required on an average to do a1 certification for a beginner.

Hi Swati A1 certification requires 45 hours of training (including the Goethe exam training). Online training is as effective as classroom training. It works comparatively smoothly over skype. Regards Shivani

Hi, It is true that without German language skill you cannot find a job in Germany. in order to work in a German environment where the official work is carried out in English you should have B1 level of proficiency, but in offices where everything is carried in German, you need to have B2 or higher level of German language skill. In Germany usually one level takes 3 months(a1.1 +a1.2= a1) provided one takes 3 to 4 hour class 5 days a week. In India however it is a difficult task but i must say it isn't impossible. you can learn it by yourself from DW.de however you will sometime require that kick to get going. Find a private tutor or join a class where there are many students and take those classes. It will help you clear your doubts and chance to interact with people trying to learn. secondly keep going through internet materials. Focus on grammar and vocabulary at first. next start reading and then once you have a considerable amount of word count, watch kids stories because they are the easiest to understand or go through programmes on Dw.de. hope this helps. read less

Classroom training is preferred, but if you have time constraints to travel to teacher's place, online is a compromise. For a beginner, A1 level requires minimum 50 hours of face to face teaching. This does not include time students spend doing home work. Also, if you are appearing for exam, you need to spend additional hours doing practice papers. read less

Like Nilima said, online training has its limitations. However, I would strongly suggest you first get a taste of how the language is on a fantastic app 'DuoLingo' (available both on Android and Apple stores) and take it forward from there.

German Language Expert (UrbanPro & Goethe Certified)

Online course is not effective, hence should not be preferred. 40-50 hours of classes are normally prescribed by reknown institutes such as Goethe Institute. 'Interaction' is the soul essential key point while learning a foreign language, which you would surely be deprived of during 'Online Classes'...

Unlike any other subject, it is very important to learn the language face to face. but in today's world any online interactive tools can give you the same platform to learn the language sitting in your own house comfortably and learning it via skype. 2. It is up to your capacity to adapt the skill. It is just like learning music. Some people learn it fast and for some it may take time. But usually one can finish the course of A1 within 20 weeks, with 7-8 hrs learning per week read less
