A covalent bond is a type of bond in which sharing of electrons takes place between the atoms. For example, sharing of 1 electron between sodium and chlorine atom is a type of covalent bond. The carbon atom has 4 electrons in its outermost shell; that is, it can form four covalent bonds with other atoms. Also, carbon has a wide range of forming compounds with many atoms.
