कुछ लोगों का मत है कि गांधीजी प्रैक्टिकल आइडियालिस्ट थे। वे व्यवहारिकता को पहचानते थे। उन्होंने केवल आदर्शों का सहारा नहीं लिया बल्कि वह आदर्शों के साथ-साथ व्यवहारिकता को मिला कर चले। लेखक के अनुसार इसके लिए गांधीजी ने कभी भी अपने आदर्शों की व्यवहारिकता के स्तर पर नहीं उतरने दिया। उन्होंने व्यवहारिकता को ऊंचा उठाकर उसे आदर्शों की ऊंचाई तक पहुंचाया। दूसरे शब्दों में यह भी कहा जा सकता है कि उन्होंने कभी भी सोने में तांबा मिलाने की कोशिश नहीं की बल्कि तांबे में सोना मिला कर उसकी कीमत बढ़ाई। शुद्ध सोने में ताँबे की मिलावट का अर्थ है - आदर्शवाद में व्यवहारवाद को मिला देना। शुद्ध सोना आदर्शों का प्रतीक है और ताँबा व्यावहारिकता का प्रतीक है।
