My journey as an IELTS Trainer for all these years has been a saga filled with excitement, challenges and loads of unique experiences. Most of the students I have dealt with, belonged to the 17 to 21 age group, who take the Academic IELTS. In the initial days of my career as a Trainer, I felt that the students would find the test very easy to crack, as they were the ones who have the experience of taking the school board exams or are pursuing under graduation. Individuals who are in touch with studies, are supposed to excel in this English proficiency test. But, sparing a few, the students are usually very apprehensive about this test. They often face problems in the Reading section, where the passages test the knowledge of synonyms. It would be cake walk for a student who has thoroughly studied his/her English syllabus in the right earnest. Surprisingly, the scenario is much different than it should have been. The majority of the test takers need guidance in understanding how to locate the answers within the stipulated time. In the Listening section, the major issue that the students face, is the speed at which the dialogue is delivered. Intent listening and noting down the answers simultaneously need a lot of practice. Once they get the hang of it, getting a high score is not that difficult. As my experience goes, I have observed that students score well in listening as compared to other sections. Writing is an area, where nearly every student I have come across finds it tough to score. Students face problems in creating the content revolving round the topic, as per the given guidelines. As far as the Speaking test goes, most of the students find the cue card section most challenging. When we talk about the General IELTS test takers, they need a lot more practice and guidance than their younger counterparts – the Academic IELTS test takers. This is because of the fact that the individuals who take this test are generally job seekers or people who are applying for a Permanent Residence in a foreign country. Since they are no more in touch with mainstream academics, they find it challenging to take a typical English test. Overall, what I have observed is that the test takers are initially nervous about the test, but after regular practice and guidance, they emerge more confident and determined. What I have experienced as a Trainer is that, I was always sure about the final performance of my students. I shared a very strong bond with each student, which enabled me to identify their weaknesses. Every student has their own unique problem area, where improvement was needed. The main challenge was identifying the weaknesses of each student so that they can be worked upon. It feels truly satisfying to see my students perform well in the test. So far, my experience has been truly pleasing and rewarding and I look forward to continuing this journey of training and interacting with young people to pave their way towards fulfilling their dreams.
