GMAT Score - Validity, Good Scores for ISB, Harvard, INSEAD etc

GMAT Score

A GMAT score is the first thing any B-school looks for when it comes to admission. Depending on the score, a candidate gets placed in B-schools. Hence, it plays an important part in the admission process. Prestigious colleges also set cut-off marks as one of their criteria for students to take admission. Previously, Harvard and Stanford University had set the highest cut-off marks in 2016 at 725 and 733, respectively, out of the total 800 marks.

As mentioned earlier, GMAT exam is marked on a score of 200-800 and GMAC also confirmed that two third of the applicants score in between a range of 400-600.

Verbal and Quantitative Section scoring:

The scoring pattern in the verbal and quantitative section depends on three parameters.

a) The number of questions answered within the stipulated time.

b) Cumulative right answers are given

c) Number of questions answered with a statistical characteristic (difficult or easy)

Both Verbal and Quantitative sections are marked on basis of computerised marking.

The first question in each section is of mid-range difficulty. The scoreboard can recalculate the answers given by a candidate. If the first answer is correct then the next question that the scoreboard gives is a little hard. However, if the first answer is incorrect, then the score goes down and the next question that comes up is a little easier.

Verbal Section of the GMAT exam is marked on a scale of 0-60. The table given below will give you an idea about the score and their percentile value for this section.

The Quantitative Section of the GMAT exam is also marked on a scale of 0-60. The table given below will help in getting an idea about the scoring pattern:

 GMAT Score Validity

GMAT Score is valid for 5 years. This can be used to pursue an MBA program and for getting a job, as many recruitment companies use GMAT Score for providing jobs. However, if any candidate is unhappy with the scores or wants to cancel them, he/she will have to wait for at least 16 days to reappear in the test again. The list of schools that have been selected by the candidate at the test centre, will also receive the score after 20 days of commencement of the exam.

Every admissions committee set criteria for students to get enrolled in business schools. Based on these criteria, a candidate can start preparing themselves for the GMAT exam to secure a seat for themselves in their preferred business school.
