that is primarily because of the way Kathak is portrayed in Bollywood movies. Mostly, Kathak is portrayed as the dance of courtesans in such movies (Umrao Jaan, Mangal Pandey: The Rising, Devdas and many more).12 Apr 2015

To do Kathak chakkars without losing balance, you can try these tips:

Spotting: Focus on a single point while spinning.

Center yourself: Keep your center elongated and strong, and don't shift it.

Keep your core tight: Maintain a straight back and balance your hands at the same level.

Practice consistently: This will help you achieve the right balance of speed and frequency.

Pull your arms in quickly: Avoid letting your hands drift outside, as this will create drag and slow you down.

Keep your leg close to the ground: When you're first learning, don't lift your leg too high.

Name the space around you: Name the directions of north, south, east, and west.

Tap your feet in rhythm: Tap your feet in a synchronized rhythm without moving other parts of your body.

As such no bad effect on knees as it's very natural activity which increase your stamina. Kathak is a very simple and healthy exercise like aerobics. It involves normal straight posture and high speed circles and foot work. Nothing will happen to knees...instead it gives more stamina to work.

Kathak (Devanagari: कथक) is one of the nine major forms of Indian classical dance. Its origin is attributed to the traveling bards in ancient northern India known as Kathakar ("storyteller"), who communicated stories from the Hindu epics through dance, songs and music.
