Dear student,

Phosphorous has 4 valence electrons present in 3s2 3p3 configuration.

For it to have covalency of 5, it need to have valence obitals along with 5 valence electrons.

Thus, phosphorous has five valence electrons also it has empty d orbital in the third shell which can be used to have the covalency of five.

It forms an excited state with one electron in each of the five orbitals, that is in 3s, 3p and one of the 3d orbital.

Therefore, it has covalency more than 4

Same is applicable for Sulphur since it has 6 valence electrons.

Students phosphorus and sulphur belongs to 3rd period elements. Apart 3s and 3p orbital 3d orbitals also participate in bonding. Covalency of these elements greater than 4

P and S have d-orbitals in their valence shell and therefore, can accommodate more than 8. electrons in their respective valence shells. Hence they show covalency more than 4.
