India had a very rich and old tradition of handwritten manuscripts-in Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, as well as in various vernacular languages.
The five features of old traditional handwritten manuscripts of India are
(i) Manuscripts were copied on palm leaves or on handmade papers. The pages of manuscripts were sometimes beautifully illustrated.
(ii) Manuscripts would be either pressed between wooden covers or sewn together to ensure preservation.
(iii) Even in the late 19th century, manuscripts continued to be produced after the introduction of printing press.
(iv) Manuscripts were highly expensive and fragile. They had to be handled carefully.
(v) Manuscripts could not be read easily as the scripts were written in different styles. Thus, manuscripts were not widely used in everyday life.
