No, Horace was not a typical thief. He robbed only once in a year to have enough money to last for twelve months. He was fond of expensive books which he used to buy from the stolen money. Otherwise, he was considered as an honest and respectable person.

The work he did looked honest, and he also employed 2 helpers. The frequency of the theft was also the reason behind sucessfully avoiding the suspection.

This description is apt for Horace because he was a fifty years old unmarried man who made locks to earn his living. Moreover, he is successful enough at his business to keep two helpers. He is a respectable fellow in the society.

“Horace Danby was good and respectable − but not completely honest”. This description is apt for Horace because he was a fifty years old unmarried man who made locks to earn his living. Moreover, he is successful enough at his business to keep two helpers. He is a respectable fellow in the society. He is not completely honest because he robs a safe every year. He likes to collect rare and expensive books. He robs only once a year. He plans the robbery carefully. He intends to collect the amount of money which he may need to buy rare and expensive books. Though he has a good intention behind robbing, yet the fact that he stole to achieve this end shows that he is not completely honest.
He cannot be categorised as a typical thief because he doesn't have the habit of stealing things. He only steals the money that is enough to buy the books.
