Until that happens, there need to be a temporary motivation thats required to be given by making them see the vision and visualise their future self being fit and healthy 10-20 years from now.

It's safe, only if you know what the problem is and what is causing or aggravating it so that those movements can be avoided and only the ones that do not cause harm can be practised.
There could be many reasons for the pain, and the two best people who can find this would be:
Get that checked up, and you will get alternate yoga poses that you can practise till the knee gets better.
