It's a process where the nitrogen (N2) is converted into ammonia (NH3), it's used by the plants to absorb nitrogen from the soil as nitrogen is an essential mineral, it cannot be absorbed directly by the plants, so it's converted into this form (ammonia). There are many nitrogen-fixing bacteria which help in the process like azotobacter, cyanobacteria (blue, green algae), hope it helped a little.
