Hi its relative quantification of Vol. voids with respect to Vol. solids in the medium. Mathematically ratio of volume of voids to volume of solids. Thanks.

First and foremost its a relative quantity (ie ratio), Its the ratio of Volume of Voids(Vv) to Volume of Solids(Vs) (not total volume), Void Ratio (e) ranges from 0 to infinity Case 1: e=0 In a very high dense soil or say rock, volume of voids(Vv) will be approx 1% whereas volume of solid particles(Vs)...

Here assume bucket as total volume (V), water as voids volume (Vv), soil particles as solids volume (Vs) ... (e=Vv/Vs) in this case Vs = 0(approx); Vv=99% (approx) .. hence e=infinity read less

Void ratio is volume of voids divided by total volume of any substance.

It is basically a determinant of engineering properties of aggregates or soil. It is the ratio of volume of voids to the volume of solids. It is the volume of voids per unit of volume of solids.

Dr P G Balakrishnan Porosity or Void volume of a porous material like a brick or, for a technical example, the plates or electrodes of a lead-acid cell refers to the empty space in the material. Generally the porosity can be determined by immersing the porous sample (for example, a piece of brick) in a suitable liquid. For brick we can use water. The difference between the dry weight and wet weight of the sample is a measure of the voids or empty pores. In the case of a flat read less

The difference between the dry weight and wet weight of the sample is a measure of the voids or empty pores. In the case of a flat plate of a lead-acid cell, the positive plate porosity can be determined as follows: From the overall dimensions the apparent volume can be found out (Va) cc. By deducting the grid volume (Vg) cc from Va cc, the volume available for the active material (Vam) can be obtained. Assuming the true density of PbO2 in the plate to be 8.8g/cc, one can arrive at the true volume of PbO2 (Vtv) from its weight and density. Deducting Vtv from Vam the volume of the empty pores can be calculated. Per cent Porosity = (Pore space*100) / Vam read less
