In the absence of control statement, program execution happens sequentially. Control statements are used to change the sequence of execution depending on particular condition. Some of the control statements are if..else, switch/case and looping constructs such as for and while.

In a programming language, if you can call the same function from itself, then the programming language supports recursion. There are many problems which can be solved by recursion as it's very intuitive. For example, factorial of a number can be defined in terms of factorial(n) = factorial(n -1) * factorial(n-2) * factorial(n-3).... factorial(2) * factorial(1). As you can see, you can write the factorial of a given number using a recursive function. Here is a C snippet for the same. int fact(n) { if ( n == 1) { return 1; } else { return n * fact(n -1); } }
