The French language, as we know it today, emerged from the evolution of Vulgar Latin during the Middle Ages. The earliest known form of the French language is known as Old French (ancien français), which was spoken from approximately the 9th century to the 14th century. Therefore, we can say that the French language is over a thousand years old.
Old French gradually evolved into Middle French (moyen français), which was spoken from the 14th century to the 17th century. During this period, French underwent significant changes in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.
From the 17th century onward, the language transitioned into Early Modern French (français moderne), which eventually developed into the standard French we use today.
It's worth noting that various dialects and regional languages were spoken on the territory of modern-day France before the emergence of Old French. These languages, such as Gaulish, Frankish, and Gallo-Romance, contributed to the linguistic heritage that ultimately shaped the French language we know today.
