A teacher is always a learner. In this ever changing world, teachers need to update their content and pedagogic knowledge to ensure effective learning outcomes. After completing my M.Phil in English, I have been teaching English as a second language to tertiary level learners. The main objective of my teaching is to improve the communication skills of learners, both oral and written. Theory would not work with young learners as they get easily distracted. By theory I mean grammar-oriented teaching. More than teaching rules pertaining to language, it is the practical use of language that makes any learner of a language proficient in communication skills. Group discussions, role-play activities, debates, and other relevant methods have been used by me the develop the oral communication skills of my learners.
