Development Carnatic music developed in the south Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. The music is deeply connected to religious and spiritual practices. The Trinity of Carnatic Music The music's structure and philosophy were shaped by three great Tamil saint-composers: Saint Thyagaraja, Saint Muthuswami Dikshitar, and Saint Shyama Shastri. Purandaradasa The advent of Purandaradasa in 1484 was a landmark in the development of Carnatic music. His systematization and refinement of the art has remained the same to this day. Carnatic music and instruments Carnatic music is more oriented to the voice than northern styles. Instruments are played to imitate singing, with embellishments that are characteristic of vocal music.
