Not always. But when you are a beginner it will be easy to concentrate on idol which we will call Sakara. Through this our thinking will be narrow. but by practicing this we can reach to Nirakara where we belive that god has no particual shape then we dont need any idol. then we belives that he is everywhere. so Idol worship is like the first step.

Bhakti yoga will help to awaken the Kundalini. the Keerthans, and Mantras which creates vibrations and pushes the prana flow upward. Even if we take the Temples, their architecture are also which will pushes the prana upward push to raise the kundalini. Thats why ladies are prohibited during their menstrual days. like this In every Religious Keerthans, Pujas, Even thinking of God which will makes the special vibes throughout your surrondings which pushes upwards. But ofcource, it will be very minute time. But by practicing Bhakthi yoga perfectly by knowing the divine self we can awaken the Kundalini.
