The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) process consists of three main stages:
1. Preliminary Exam (Prelims)
Nature: Objective (MCQ-based)
Papers:
General Studies Paper-I (GS-I)
Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) - Paper-II (Qualifying)
Duration: 2 hours each
Total Marks: 400 (200 each)
Purpose: Screening for Mains (marks not counted in final ranking)

Papers:
1 Essay Paper (250 marks)
4 General Studies Papers (250 marks each)
2 Optional Subject Papers (250 marks each)
2 Language Papers (Qualifying)
Duration: 3 hours per paper
Total Marks: 1750 (only GS, Essay, and Optional counted)
3. Personality Test (Interview)
Nature: Face-to-face interview with UPSC board
Marks: 275
Focus: Leadership, personality, decision-making, and general knowledge
Final Selection Process
Total Marks: 2025 (Mains 1750 + Interview 275)
Merit List: Based on Mains + Interview marks
Training: Selected candidates undergo training at respective academies (LBSNAA for IAS, etc.)
The entire process takes about a year from notification to final results.
