I have been an investor in stock market since 2006 and have been a trader post Corona in options . I teach students options and technical analysis . I have NISM Series 8 and 21b certifications .
Yes stock market is a zero sum game in the secondary market when it is traded . Number of equity shares are fixed . Therefore when someone sells A number of shares some other person or group of people will buy the same A number of shares . But when company management decides to infuse more shares then company owners are diluting their stakes or selling their shareholding for common people to increase their shareholding . Again it is a zero sum game because here also the number of additional shares available to public for purchase is same as those offloaded by management .
But the fact that it is a zero sum game overall doesn't have that great a significance on an individual . Because if he is constantly making losses , obviously another person is constantly making profit from his losses. But that another person is not constant and is not possible or useful to be tracked ...it is like you did not take a Rs 10 note from a shopkeeper because you find it in a abd condition . Now the shopkeeper may have given it to someone else but from your perspective it is not important to know what happens with the 10 Rs note . I hope you found my explanation worthwhile .
