Like "Stockholm Syndrome" are there phrases depicting some other cities Stockholm Syndrome: The term takes its name from a bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden, in August 1973. The robber took four employees of the bank (three women and one man) into the vault with him and kept them hostage for 131 hours. After the employees were finally released, they appeared to have formed a paradoxical emotional bond with their captor; they told reporters that they saw the police as their enemy rather than the bank robber, and that they had positive feelings toward the criminal.

While the psychological condition in hostage situations became known as “Stockholm Syndrome” due to the publicity – the emotional “bonding” with captors was a familiar story in psychology. It had been recognized many years before and was found in studies of other hostage, prisoner, or situations such as: Abused Children Battered/Abused Women Prisoners of War Cult Members Incest Victims Criminal Hostage Situations Concentration Camp Prisoners Controlling/Intimidating Relationships In the final analysis, emotionally bonding with an abuser is actually a strategy for survival for victims and intimidation. The “Stockholm Syndrome” reaction in hostage situations is so well recognized at this time that police hostage negotiators no longer view it as unusual. In fact, it is often encouraged in crime situations as it improves the chances for survival of the hostages. On the down side, it also assures that the hostages experiencing “Stockholm Syndrome” will not be very cooperative during rescue or criminal prosecution. read less

Mr Singaravelu, I am getting a syndrome of getting my GK and IQ busting my head off .... however I am learning all the time. The tombstone will be my diploma... So talking of geographical syndromes lets start with the Paris syndrome ...Could Any Other City Produce This Bizarre Affliction? An apparently real disorder, somewhat similar to a panic attack, that has afflicted many tourists while visiting the City of Lights. Most Paris Syndrome sufferers have been Japanese tourists, and the cause of their symptoms, which include "acute delusions, hallucinations, dizziness, sweating, and feelings of persecution," is thought to be linked to extreme disappointment that Paris is not always the magical, romantic wonderland it's so often made out to be in the movies: No offence to my religious brethren but its the Jerusalem syndrome: Delusions, obsessive ideas, psychosis-like phenomena triggered by, or leading to, a visit to the Holy Land. Jerusalem Syndrome often emerges in people who are prone to delusions and, it’s reported, pass within a few weeks of visiting the city. Lima Syndrome AKA this is the antonymn of Stockholm Syndrome, Lima Syndrome deals with the phenomenon of hostage takers becoming sympathetic to the needs and feelings of their victims. Lima syndrome was coined after the Japanese embassy hostage crisis in Lima, that lasted from December 17, 1996 until April 22, 1997. Fourteen members of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement took several hundred diplomats hostage at the official residence of Japan’s ambassador to Peru. Curiously, within a few days of the hostage crisis, the militants had released most of the captives. Last but not the least India Syndrome We could almost say this is the one Liverpool gave to the world… India Syndrome applies to people from the west visiting India to seek enlightenment, or to those with a deep interest in eastern mysticism, and saw a marked spike following the Beatles’ trips to India in 1968, to attend an advanced Transcendental Meditation. Taken to extremes, the condition has resulted in many westerners suffering, going missing, or in some extreme cases, dying – due to ‘extreme’ meditation (such as Tibetan ‘chöd’ which involves meditating next to corpses for up to ten days). India syndrome is not to be confused with Delhi-Belly Syndrome. Although that, too, can result in sufferers going missing for long periods of time. But don't stop going around the world!!
