A phone interview is an important step in the job search process. Since you don't meet face-to-face, you need to rely on your voice, confidence, and preparation. Here are some important strategies that will help you prepare better:
1. Prepare well
Learn about the company and the position: Get an idea of their mission, vision, recent news, or projects.
Practice answering common questions: Answer questions like "Tell me about yourself" or "How did you handle a challenging situation" using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
Keep your resume and job description handy: You can refer to them during the interview.
2. Create the right environment
Choose a quiet place: Avoid distractions and have good signal.
Keep a glass of water and a notepad: To moisten your throat or write down important information if necessary.
3. Speak confidently and clearly
Speak with a smile: This will bring positivity to your voice.
Speak slowly and clearly: Speaking clearly, rather than quickly, conveys confidence.
4. Listen carefully
Wait until the question is finished: Answer without interrupting and understand.
If you don't understand something, ask again: This is perfectly normal and professional behavior.
5. Ask questions
Show your interest: For example, asking questions about the team's work style, the company's culture, or how you measure success—these types of questions make a good impression.
6. Follow up after the interview
Send a thank-you note: Send an email within 24 hours to express your interest and highlight any specific talking points.
I generally don't recommend anyone to use phone for an interview which includes video conferencing. If you don't have any other opinion (Laptop, desktop, TAB) only then , use cellphone to participate. Few key points to be considered:-
1. Find a quite place and use a headphone with ANC.
2. Please use browser and desktop mode for video conferencing. It would provide wide angle.
3. Please use a tripod or cellphone holder for stabilizing the cellphone for any movement or disruption.
4. Please use Broadband connection to get connected to the internet.
5. Please try to look through the camera embedded into your cellphone while making eye contact.
6. Please use a proper background/wallpaper/wall/background effect to make yourself visible/prominent in the screen for all panelists.
Feel free to reach out to me if you want to be ready to take any interview confidently.
