Hello all tutors, I have recently started taking Spoken English tuitions at home. Right now I am teaching from the books of an institute which I know. Wanted to find out some good study material for one to one tuitions, something which can have a practice / self study section as well. Would be nice to hear from all you experienced tutors. Thanks in advance.

Hello Pushkaraj, if you want to do one to one tuitions , the best approach is the understand where your student stands and go from there. I found from my experience taking sessions that study material doesn't provide much scope for improving fluency. Explain the basics of forming correct sentences to your students, which should take no more than 10% of your agreed time. Have the student speak during the remaining time, bringing the attention to the mistakes happening and having the students apply what you've taught. Also, internet is a vast resource. So encourage your students to practice as much as possible from the net and come back with doubts so that you can clarify them. Spoon-feeding doesn't work because fluency in speaking comes from day-to-day conversations than from studying some pre-designed material. read less
