We are going to talk about ways of giving emphasis and speaking dramatically

1. The easiest and most well known way is to write the sentence in the passive voice, which shifts the emphasis from the subject to the object of a verb.

Example

This book is being read by me.( the object book is emphasized  not the subject reader)

2. Inversion

Normal-

a) I had never seen a stronger man than him.

b) She was so beautiful  that I fell in love with her

c) The spy came through the window

Inverted-

a).Never had I seen a stronger man than him

b) So beautiful was she ,that I fell in love with her

c) Through the window, came the spy

The 'it' cleft to emphasize different parts of a sentence

Ashok ate my lunch yesterday

1. Emphasize Ashok

It was Asok that ate my lunch

2. Emphasize lunch

It was my lunch that Ashok ate

3. Emphasize when the lunch was eaten

It was yesterday  that Ashok ate my lunch

The 'what' cleft

Normal - They moved us to a new hotel

to emphasize the whole sentence

What they did was move us to a new hotel
