The Spanish language spread to Latin America during the Age of Exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries, when Spanish explorers, conquistadors, and missionaries arrived following Christopher Columbus's 1492 voyage. Spain colonized much of Central and South America, establishing settlements, converting indigenous populations, and imposing Spanish as the dominant language for administration, religion, and education. Over time, Spanish became widely spoken, blending with local languages and evolving into diverse regional dialects.

The Spanish language uses the Latin alphabet, consisting of 27 letters. It includes the 26 letters of the English alphabet plus the letter "ñ," which represents a unique sound in Spanish. Spanish also uses accent marks on vowels (á, é, í, ó, ú) and the dieresis (ü) to clarify pronunciation and meaning.
