Weapons for self-defense are not banned in Canada, but there are restrictions on their use: Proportionate force The Criminal Code allows the use of proportionate force to defend oneself, but not the use of a firearm for this purpose. Reasonable grounds A person is not guilty of an offense if they believe on reasonable grounds that force is being used against them. Severe threat The weapon must only be used to defend oneself against a very severe and probable threat. Prohibited weapons Some weapons are prohibited, including brass knuckles, switch blades, centrifugal force knives, and nun chucks. Self-defense against police Self-defense is not applicable if used against a police officer or another person engaged in the enforcement of the law. Self-defense is a fact-specific inquiry, and the court will consider the circumstances of the incident. read less
