Pianos have pedals to change the tone and create different effects: Sustain pedal Also called the damper pedal, this pedal is located on the right side of the piano and is the most commonly used pedal. It prolongs the sound of notes by lifting the dampers off the strings, allowing them to vibrate freely. This gives the notes a fuller sound and creates a rich tonal quality. Sostenuto pedal Also called the middle pedal, this pedal allows the pianist to sustain specific notes while playing other notes. This creates a layered and nuanced effect, allowing the pianist to create distinctive textures. A variation of this pedal is the practice pedal, which deadens the sound of the piano. Una corda pedal Also called the soft pedal or shift pedal, this pedal is located on the left side of the piano. It moves the keyboard and hammers to the right, which reduces the sound output and changes the timbre. This pedal is often used in classical music. read less

The purpose of the pedals is to change the tone of the piano in some way. The damper pedal, also called the sustain pedal, prolongs the sound of the piano by lifting all of the dampers off the strings. This sustains the sound, and also allows all of the strings to vibrate sympathetically.
