Cristofori was a skilled harpsichord maker, and he developed the piano by addressing the limitations of the harpsichord, which could not vary the volume of the sound produced based on how hard the keys were pressed. Cristofori's invention, originally called the "gravicembalo col piano e forte" (which means "harpsichord with soft and loud"), featured a mechanism that allowed for dynamic control, meaning the player could produce both soft and loud sounds depending on the force used to strike the keys. This dynamic range was a significant innovation and led to the name "pianoforte," which was later shortened to "piano." read less
