I qualified as a TESOL certified teacher in 2010 after completing a Bachelor of Social Science from an English University in South Africa. Thereafter, I worked as a full-time English teacher in South Korea for a year. Whilst I was there I taught English to a range of students, some of whom could not speak a word of this language. By the end of my year there these students were able to construct sentences and converse in basic English. With the more advanced students, I taught effective communication skills including writing and speaking in a manner that most directly and persuasively conveyed the particular message of each student. For private lessons, I work very closely with each student constructing a unique lesson programme that takes into account the student's particular needs and learning style. Whether this is practicing basic conversational English while we engage in some activity like cooking or exploring the neighbourhood or more structured lessons working through exercise books. Generally, I like to take a holistic approach to teaching, an approach which engages the student in an authentic manner. I find that this approach better equips the student to take the lessons learnt and easily apply these in everyday life.
