You can mix some acrylic paint with a lighter color and medium and glaze over the dark color. White can make it look chalky though. Yellow or bright orange over red can make the red look lighter. Yellow over green will work

If you want lighten the acrylic paint, you can dampen the colour mixture with the help of brush and add some light shade of colour. You lower down the tints by adding white to the colour
