Anhydrous AlCl3 is a lewis acid as the Al has its sextet fulfilled. This makes the compound electron loving. In many organic reactions it is used to separate compounds like Cl2 into Cl+ and Cl- which would help in the aromatic electrophillic substitution, which otherwise would have formed Cl free radical owing to homolytic fission.
