If the scale is already known, then there is no point in applying major/minor since you already know it. But from your question, I think you ask when the root is known, what it should be major or minor. Try to find the chord difference, resolving note or chord, and feel the song. A simple method is to try both major and minor over the song and see which one suits best.

It depends on the chord progression you are playing over. If the chords are minor, then we have to play the minor scale and similarly for major. But that doesn't mean you can't choose a major scale over a minor. But if you are starting with soloing for the first time, apply this. E.g., For A minor chord, play A natural minor ( aeolian mode) or minor pentatonic scale. For A major, play A major scale (Ionian mode) or major pentatonic scale. I hope it helps.
