Hello Supriya,
My extreme apologies for delayed response.
If you want to start your career in IT Industry(or already working), then you can definitely learn Core Java.
After learning Core Java, you can switch into any skill like Automation Testing or Development.
Also, if you learn any one programming language then it's very easy to learn any other language.Because in other programming language only syntax changes, way of developing the logic will remain the same.
So, my recommendation is you can learn core Java as learning is never harmful.

In simple words a program is a "plan" that you give to a computer to execute.
So basically anyone who can plan can program. Its a matter of will to learn and want to program.
Its just that you need to express that plan in a language understood by the computer.
Being a trainer myself I have come across people of different ages and from different walks of life taking it up.
Programming is a way of expressing your thoughts/ideas/logic/concepts to the computer using a language understood by the computer.
All the apps/software/programs are nothing but solutions to our real life problems executed by the computer to make our lives better.
In a computer we seek an assistant to do stuff for us. An assistant which is highly intelligent and can speak the same language as we do so that we can express ourselves better in the language we are familiar with. However today's computers are not up to the mark in the sense that we are still in the process of making them intelligent(AI) and teaching them our language(English).
We need to train our assistant so that it becomes fluent in English and is intelligent.
In fact, one the most prominent of the holy books of programming goes by the name 'The Art of Computer Programming' by one the greatest computer theorist of all time Donald Knuth. Pun intended.
