Of course you can. It is a better choice than pen. It helps you to erase the wrongly written words and replace it with correct ones. With pen means you have to strike it off and if you repeat this mistake three or four times your answer sheet looks ugly. Above all if it is a formal letter, you are not supposed to make any striking.
