Grammatical Inaccuracies In Writing And Speaking

Hi,

Grammatical accuracy in writing module is one of the key factors that the examiners of IELTS take into consideration while giving a band score.

Here is one typical mistake what one of my students has made. Read the sentence and find what it is?

With the advent of advanced medical technologies, the life expectancy of human beings has increased significantly when compared to the people of the past.

ERROR: It’s not ‘when compared to the people of the past’ but it is ‘when compared to that (life expectancy) of the people of the past’.

You cannot compare ‘the life expectancy to the people’. Question yourself what you are comparing to or with.

Read some more examples here:

  • The climate of London is cooler than Australia. ( WRONG)
  • The climate of London is cooler than the climate (or that) of Australia. ( RIGHT)
  • Eating fruits is healthier than fastfoods. (WRONG)
  • Eating fruits is healthier than eating fastfoods. ( RIGHT)

Avoid this kind of mistake in your writing part.
