To master the laya in Hindustani music, you can try these techniques:
  • Practice the Talam
Talam is the practice of using hand movements to show rhythm. It's important to make your talam loud and audible, especially when you're first learning.

  • Feel the rhythm
Try to feel the rhythm throughout your body, and connect it to your vocal expressions.

  • Understand the three types of laya
The three main types of laya are Vilambit Laya (slow tempo), Madhya Laya (medium tempo), and Drut Laya (fast tempo). The difference between the types is based on the intervallic distances between two beats.

Laya is the process of separating sounds by time. For example, if you clap for ten seconds, each clap will be spaced out by some amount of time.

Hi, I am interested in learning singing. I have given performance at school level. After that I am not in touch with music. Also, I have difficulty in singing high notes. Kindly suggest which type of music should I carry on for practicing?
Hi Ankita, Nice to know that you want to learn music. I would suggest to continue the music which you were learning at your school level. So that you can learn it easily and then move on to the advanced lessons.
