भारतीय सिनेमा की शुरुआत 1913 में हुई, जब भारत की पहली मूक फिल्म 'राजा हरिश्चंद्र' बनी थी। यह फिल्म जाने-माने लेखक भारतेंदु हरिशचंद्र के नाटक 'हरिशचंद्र' पर आधारित थी। इसे महान फिल्ममेकर दादा साहब फाल्के ने बनाया था। फाल्के के प्रयासों से ही भारतीय फिल्म इंडस्ट्री की नींव पड़ी। 1895 में लूमियर ब्रदर्स ने पेरिस सैलून सभाभवन में इंजन ट्रेन की पहली फिल्म प्रदर्शित की थी। इन्हीं लूमियर ब्रदर्श ने 7 जुलाई 1896 को बंबई के वाटसन होटल में फिल्म का पहला शो भी दिखाया था। एक रुपया प्रति व्यक्ति प्रवेश शुल्क देकर बंबई के संभ्रात वर्ग ने वाह-वाह और करतल ध्वनि के साथ इसका स्वागत किया। उसी दिन भारतीय सिनेमा का जन्म हुआ था।
