I think as a begginer one should go for songs in which basic chords are used these are ; Tum Hi, Mera Mann Kehne Lga, Saddi Gli, Pani Da Rang, Humsafar, Nazm Nazm, Nothing Else Matter and many more.

How hard should I press the guitar strings?
It should only touch the fret so that it limits the vibrating length. Press the strings with the very tips of your fingers. They're harder than the fleshy part of the flat of the finger, and that means you'll need less pressure
