The best possible way to learn German is to "read" the German text and also "hear" the same text spoken in German. Because both reading and hearing are involved, you learn the language ASAP.

But without a teacher nothing is good especially for german. You should have to learn pronunciation, cases dativ, accusativ, place of verb, types of verbs and so on. So teacher is must. read less

There should be a balance between the two. Listening is equally important as reading. Reading gives you insight of the theory, enhances your vocabulary and keeps you aware of the Grammar of that language...
