The conservatism concept, which is related to the idea that expenses and liabilities should be recognised as soon as possible in situations where there is uncertainty about the possible outcome, and that assets and revenues should only be recorded when they are guaranteed to be received, is a concept in accounting.
In other words, the conservatism principle dictates that, given two potential outcomes for any accounting issue, the accountant must select the outcome that is the most conservative or has the lowest likelihood of being profitable.
In the worst case, the company should overstate its liabilities and expenses while understating its assets and revenues.
