The conversion of Nitrogen (N2) present in the atmosphere to ammonia (NH3) is called Nitrogen-fixation. It is done by bacteria which are either free-living or form a symbiotic association with plants. It happens because the atmospheric nitrogen present is usually a non-reactive molecule which is useless to all. That's why bacteria comes there, and conversion of N2 takes place. It is essential because plants cannot directly absorb N2 from the atmosphere, so the conversion takes place, and they can absorb through there roots.
