Folk dance is a type of dance form that is based performed for various reasons like the harvest of food, etc, often to the local music. It reflects the lifestyle of a group of people in a certain region or country. Folk dances are not trained dancers and the steps and posture are usually not professional. They’re mainly performed in groups to symbolize and celebrate joy.
Classical is a professional dance form that traces its origin to Natya Shastra which symbolizes ancient drama and theatre. Some of the most famous classical dances are Bharatnatyam, Kathak etc.

Classical dance forms are thousands of years old, probably mentioned in ancient texts such as NatyaShastra. in Indian context they are closely related to depicting stories of Indian Mythology. In India there are 8 types of classical dances. Classical dances are rigid with their techniques.
On the other hand folk dances vary from one region to the other. These are passed on via word of mouth/ performing together from one generation to the other. And folk dances do not specifically depict tales of Indian mythology.
