Defining algebriac expression: An algebraic expression is the combination of constants and variables connected by some or all of the four fundamental operations i.e. addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The main idea behind algebraic expression is the representation of relationship between unknown quantities or numbers.
Based on the above definition the quantities may be classified into two, namely constants and variable where constant are symbols having fixed numerical value and variables are symbols that can take various numerical values.
Terms: Different parts of algebraic expressions whic may be a single number or variable or a combination of both separated by + or - signs.
Based on the number of terms algebraic expression may be classified as:
S.no | Type | No. of Terms | Examples |
1 | Monomial | 1 | -3xyz, 7, 2xy etc. |
2 | Binomial | 2 | (a+2b), (3x-8), (2x2y-b2c) etc. |
3 | Trinomial | 3 | (a+3b-5), (x3-y3-z3), etc. |
4 | Quadrinomial | 4 | (a+2b2c-3d+8) |
5 | Polynomial | 2 or more terms | (3-2x), (x2+2xy+y2), etc. |
