I will explain the answer in two parts--what is crystallization and state the process with example. first part----what is crystallization? Answer:- A crystallization is the process used by chemists for the purification of solid substances. It is a process of formation of solid crystals precipitating from a homogenous solutions. Crystallization refers to the process of precipitating out the pure substance or compound from its solution or from an impure mixture by adding suitable solvent to it. read less

Crystallization is used to purify a solid. It is used to separate a solid that has dissolved in a liquid and made a solution. The solution is warmed in an open container, allowing the solvent to evaporate, leaving a saturated solution. A solution that has as much solid dissolved in it as it can possibly contain is called a saturated solution. As the saturated solution is allowed to cool, the solid will come out of the solution and crystals will start to grow. The crystals can then be collected and allowed to dry. A solid that does not dissolve in a liquid can be separated by filtration. read less

A suitable solvent is one which readily dissolves the solid (solute) when the solvent is in warm condition but not when it is cold. The best solvents exhibit a large difference in solubility over a reasonable range of temperatures. (eg, Water can be a crystallization solvent between 0-100oC; hydrocarbon solvents such as hexanes or petroleum ether have a different T range since they can be cooled below 0 degrees but boil below 100 degrees). read less

Crystallization is a technique which chemists use to purify solid compounds. It is one of the fundamental procedures each chemist must master to become proficient in the laboratory. Crystallization is based on the principles of solubility: compounds (solutes) tend to be more soluble in warm liquids (solvents) than they are in cold liquids. If a saturated warm solution is allowed to cool, the solute is no longer soluble in the solvent and forms crystals of pure compound. Impurities are excluded from the growing crystals and the pure solid crystals can be separated from the dissolved impurities by filtration. read less
