(a) A gas fills completely the vessel in which it is kept because gas particles are in constant motion and spread out to occupy all available space evenly. Unlike liquids and solids, gas particles have high kinetic energy and are not held together by strong forces, allowing them to move freely and rapidly. As a result, gas particles quickly disperse to fill the entire volume of the container they are in, regardless of its size or shape.

(b) A gas exerts pressure on the walls of the container because gas particles are in constant motion and collide with the walls of the container. When gas particles collide with the walls, they exert a force perpendicular to the surface, resulting in pressure. The pressure exerted by a gas is caused by the cumulative effect of countless collisions of gas particles with the walls of the container over time. This pressure is evenly distributed throughout the container, exerting force in all directions.
