Greetings to you all!
There are mainly four core skills that will have to be developed in any language which are:
- Listening skill
- Reading skill
- Speaking skill
- Writing skill
Let's look at each of these skills, one by one, to see how they could be enhanced:
1) Listening skill:
- When someone else is talking, never interrupt.
- Never talk over them, wait for your turn.
- Eliminate distractions.
- Actively listen, and not just hear.
- Clarify your doubts/queries once the speaker completes his/her turn.
- Reflect on the overall discussion.
2) Reading skill:
-
Read with correct expressions.
- Analyze phonics and spellings.
- Use a dictionary extensively to learn more about new words.
- When you learn a new word, think of all its other forms. eg: Beautiful (adjective), beauty (noun), beautifully (adverb)
- Remember that the same word may sometimes be one part of speech, and sometimes another. E.g., That brick(noun) is yellow. Here is a brick(adjective) house.
- New words are more comfortable to remember if sentences are formed using them.
3) Speaking skill:
- Speak slowly, but not too slowly.
- Pause between ideas.
- Carefully articulate and pronounce your words.
- Expand your vocabulary.
- Learn the natural flow of English.
4) Writing skill:
- Punctuation makes a huge difference.
- Grammar matters.
- Practice spellings of unfamiliar words.
- Be wary of the differences between American and British English. We follow British English. e.g., favourite is British English, and favorite is American English.
- Plan and outline the content first rather than to directly spring into action.
